The following characteristics are used in identifying various types of label materials when their basic classification information is unknown.

Polypropylene

	Hard, rigid to the touch
	Slightly waxy feel
	If ignited, will burn with a steady yellow flame

Polyethylene

Feels like polypropylene but is soft, squeezable

(PVC) Polyvinyl Chloride

	Noticeable smell
	Soft to the touch
	Burns only at flame source, otherwise will self-extinguish

Polystyrene

	Hard, rigid, glass-like surface
	Crinkles when squeezed into a ball
	Burns readily with a sputtery, orange flame and fruity odor

Polyester

	Hard, rigid, but does not crack when squeezed into a ball
	Burns after flame removal with yellow flame, forms droplets and has sweet odor

Acetate

	Hard but not rigid
	Crinkles when squeezed into a ball
	Burns like paper
