The following characteristics are used in identifying various types of label materials when their basic classification information is unknown.

Polypropylene

bullet

Hard, rigid to the touch

Slightly waxy feel

bulletIf ignited, will burn with a steady yellow flame

 

Polyethylene

bullet

Feels like polypropylene but is soft, squeezable

 

(PVC) Polyvinyl Chloride

bullet

Noticeable smell

bulletSoft to the touch
bulletBurns only at flame source, otherwise will self-extinguish

Polystyrene

bullet

Hard, rigid, glass-like surface

bulletCrinkles when squeezed into a ball
bulletBurns readily with a sputtery, orange flame and fruity odor

Polyester

bullet

Hard, rigid, but does not crack when squeezed into a ball

bulletBurns after flame removal with yellow flame, forms droplets and has sweet odor

Acetate

bullet

Hard but not rigid

bulletCrinkles when squeezed into a ball
bulletBurns like paper
