What the "KAK" virus affectsThis virus (technically, it's called a "worm") is not a terribly serious one. It will not destroy your computer or any of your programs or any of your data. Also, it only affects people who use Microsoft Outlook or Outlook Express. If you're using another email program you don't have to worry about catching an infection (although you might possibly transmit an infection to someone else). The name of the worm is "WScript/Kak.worm." You can read McAfee's description of it by clicking here. How KAK is caughtAll you have to do to catch this worm is simply view an infected email. In the past it has been impossible to catch a virus by just looking at an email. You could only catch viruses from attachments that you deliberately opened. Not with this worm. All you have to do is view the message. Once infected, any HTML-format (as opposed to plain text) messages you send out will transmit the worm with them. Microsoft has released a security patch to prevent this virus from infecting your computer. It is free to download. If you want to read what they say, you can click here. Or if you just want to download it without reading about it first, click here. How to get rid of KAK once you're infectedHowever, Microsoft's patch is only a preventative. If you already have the virus, installing their patch will not get rid of it. You must use McAfee or another anti-virus program to eliminate it. Lastly, any email messages which contain the worm cannot be cleaned. You can "contain" the virus in the message and prevent it from re-infecting your computer (by installing the above virus-protection software) or you can delete the infected message(s). However, even if you have the anti-virus software installed, if you forward an infected message to someone who doesn't have anti-virus software, they will catch the worm. Thus it is usually best to simply delete the infected messages. If you need a copy of the message, you can print it out or "cut and paste" the text from the original message into your computer's word processor. |
